News from Gary …
It is difficult to believe we are in the middle of the year already. I recently spent a few days at the National Cricket Academy. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and was impressed with the level of engagement of the young players present. It reminded me of my first Plascon Academy experience in 1987, led by the late Hylton Ackerman and just a 3 day event. I remembered how I enjoyed been able to have conversations with some of my cricketing heroes and having the opportunity to bat in the nets and show them what I was made of. How times have changed, the National Academy is now a 4 month event and the level of investment and input into each talented young player is significant.
It is now mid-term holidays and our operation at Century City and Blouberg just completed the first coaching clinic, and gearing up for the next on 11 to 14 July. Hopefully the weather is good so we can get the programme to run as smoothly as possible.
We have also started our First Team to First Class Johannesburg course on the 1st July. An exciting program as we have acquired the services of Temba Bavuma, Neil Mackenzie, Albie Morkel and Rob Walter to come and share their experiences and invaluable cricket knowledge to the young players who have signed up.
After that we head off to Amsterdam to spend 4 days with the young Dutch players who are either playing in the Dutch team or close to making the team. This batting camp is in conjunction with the KNCB and Flamingo’s cricket club who are supporting us through this project. I’m relishing the opportunity to add some value to Dutch cricket, a place I have fond memories of, having played a season there in 1993.
From there we head off to the UK to sign up players for our 3 month High Performance programme in Cape Town, starting in November. This will be our first HP programme and we are aiming to sign up 20 players to join us in Cape Town and do some cricket training whilst enjoying the beautiful surrounds of our city.
So it is a busy time for us and all our coaches are ready to put in the hard yards and provide our signed up players with quality interventions.
